Project to ‘sustain quality education’ for Syrian students concludes (The Jordan Times)
AMMAN — The UNESCO office in Amman held a closing ceremony on Thursday at the Queen Rania Teacher Academy (QRTA) to mark the conclusion of a project dealing with Syrian students’ education in Jordan.
UNESCO, along with QRTA and the Education Ministry, implemented the “Emergency Support to Safeguard Education Quality for Syrian Students in Jordan” project, according to a statement released by UNESCO.
The 4.3 million euro project, funded by the European Union, aimed at “sustaining quality education” for both young Syrian refugees and Jordanians affected by the humanitarian crisis in Syria.
In addition, the partnership was designed to address the challenges posed by the “escalating influx of Syrian refugees on the quality of education in Jordan”, the statement said.
One of the main goals was building the capacities of Jordanian teachers, with the QRTA conducting a needs assessment, designing the training materials, and delivering training to trainers and teachers.
By promoting the quality of teaching in schools with mixed populations, the project aimed to benefit displaced Syrians as well as Jordanian children attending schools overstrained by the influx of Syrian students, UNESCO said.
Under the project, nearly 440 ministry trainers (supervisors and counsellors) and 1,955 public school teachers received targeted professional development support to improve inclusive approaches to classroom management.
“This project helped to improve our education system and increased the partnership between teachers and education staff,” said Dareen Salllal, one of the teachers who participated in the training.
“Plus in many ways, [it] helped build a safe environment for our classes.”
Cooperation between the EU and UNESCO is aimed at supporting the government and citizens, as well as Syrian refugees who have sought refuge in the Kingdom during the crisis situation, according to the statement.
