UNESCO and Fojo Media Institute organise study tour in media self-regulation for senior members of media, civil society, and government

Amman, 4 December 2016 – From 4-14 December 2016, a delegation of ten senior members of the Jordanian media, government and civil society will participate in a study tour on media self-regulation organised by UNESCO Amman Office and Fojo Media Institute. Under the framework of the EU funded and UNESCO implemented “Support to Media in Jordan” Project, the delegation will visit Sweden, Denmark, and the UK and meet with self-regulatory bodies, leading media organisations, public service broadcasters, journalists’ unions and government officials and media experts.

The capacity building for self-regulation study tour is coordinated by UNESCO partner Fojo Media Institute, a leading Swedish-based organization internationally known for its engagement in capacity building for media self-regulation. The program entails a study tour to the three countries with the longest history and good models in self-regulation and co-regulation aiming at further raising the awareness of Jordanian stakeholders about the importance of self-regulatory mechanisms and building capacity through exposure to different models. The study tour will be followed by a round table in Jordan in February 2017.

“Together with our partner Fojo, UNESCO is pleased to be organising this study tour as it comes after significant discussion in the country about appropriate models of self-regulation and co-regulation,” said Ms Biljana Tatomir, Senior Project Officer at the Support to Media in Jordan Project.

“We sincerely hope that the study tour will be enlightening and enriching for all participants, and that it will advance the discussion on issues of media self-regulation or co-regulation in Jordan,” she added.

The delegation will be encouraged to share their experiences on social media using the hashtag #JOmediatour, and live reports will be available on the “Support to Media in Jordan” Facebook page and Fojo’s Facebook page.

The “Support to Media in Jordan” Project is a comprehensive three-year project aimed at supporting Jordan’s efforts in advancing the Jordanian media to further increase its freedom, independence and professionalism. The three years project (2014 – 2017) is generously funded by the European Union and implemented by the UNESCO Amman office in close collaboration with the Ministry of State for Media Affairs and the media community in Jordan.
