UNESCO promotes critical thinking, effective communication, and teamwork through debate
As a part of UNESCO Amman Office’s Media and Information Literacy (MIL) project to incorporate MIL into the Jordanian curriculum, four high schools were chosen to pilot a series of debating classes and a training workshop for its students over the past two months.
The training workshop brought together participating students from the four schools to prepare for a final debating competition on May 13, 2013.
During the workshop, the topic for the final debate was chosen by the project partners and the participating schools to be “Freedom of expression on social media”, in line with the larger SIDA-funded project to promote and enable a suitable environment for freedom of expression in the Arab Region. Adjudicating the debate will be the audience, among which will be MIL specialists, debating trainers, media stakeholders, the schools, the Ministry of Education and UNESCO.
Prior to the student debating classes and workshop, teachers from the four schools were given a three-day training workshop to establish the guidelines, prepare the materials and familiarize with the MIL content.
In addition to teaching debating techniques, the project focused on introducing students to social media campaigning, internet-based research, news analysis and writing techniques. As a result of this training, each school will utilize its students to produce an electronic gazette featuring articles on issues of concern in their communities, with a special focus on youth and gender.
