Since young people under the age of 30 make up 70% of Jordan's fast-growing population, a priority group for the Communication and Information sector is the youth. Through projects that specifically target young people, UNESCO's objective is to help empower young people by reaching out to them; responding to their expectations and ideas and helping them build long-lasting skills relevant for the workforce.
Next to its main ongoing projects targeting youth, the Communication/Information sector’s most recent crosscutting work on youth includes raising awareness on issues related to HIV/AIDS and those concerning climate change, and water scarcity in Jordan.
A second crosscutting priority is Gender Equality. The UNESCO Amman Office is currently partnering with UNWOMEN for the national Beijing+20 consultations and taking the lead for the thematic area “Women and the Media” as the only UN agency with a mandate for the promotion of the free flow of ideas by word and image.
