The UNESCO project ‘Empowering rural women in the Jordan Valley’ is a 30-month programme funded by Drosos Foundation. The project will support Ghor el Safi women’s association in their production and promotion of handicrafts, “Safi Crafts”. In this framework, the project will undertake research on natural dyes for the production of handicrafts and pilot a cultivation of Indigofera tinctoria. The Indigofera tinctoria is a plant from which a beautiful natural blue dye can be extracted, indigo. Historical and archaeological evidence reveal that indigo-bearing crops were cultivated and used in Jordan in ancient times. Nevertheless, its cultivation has now been lost.
