In the field of natural sciences, UNESCO focuses on the overarching objective to mobilize scientific knowledge and policy for sustainable development with the following three strategic programme objectives:
- Leveraging scientific knowledge for the benefit of the environment and the management of natural resources;
- Fostering policies and capacity-building in science, technology and innovation;
- Contributing to disaster preparedness and mitigation.
In Jordan, UNESCO contributes to both short and long term development efforts by building institutional and technical capacities for water resources management, supporting science and technology institutions, protecting biodiversity through policy advocacy, sharing best practices from UNESCO’s global experience, undertaking awareness-raising initiatives and promoting environmental and scientific education.
With Jordan being a particularly dry country, UNESCO has identified water and ecosystems management to be a priority for the country’s long term environmental and resource sustainability. UNESCO welcomes partners and donors to join UNESCO in its efforts to address this vital issue.
