Data Analysis and Report Writing Workshop

In Apia on 26th - 27th September 2016 UNESCO Institute for Statistics organised a two day training workshop for Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture in Samoa in Data Analysis and Report Writing.

The workshop was opened by Dr Alain Godonou, Director of UNESCO Office for the Pacific States and facilitated by Mr Greg Keeble, Statistical Cluster Advisor for the UNESCO Institute for Statistics in the Pacific.

The main purpose of the workshop was to build capacity of Ministry staff from the Policy, Planning and Research Division (PPRD) in the analysis of education data and statistical report writing.

The workshop aimed at improving the technical skills of PPRD staff to reinforce the statistical capacity of the Ministry to produce and use data for effective policy making and efficient reporting.

The main objectives of the training were to train staff in:  basic data analysis methods including data summarization, tabulation and presentation of data using tables, graphs and charts; and statistical report writing procedures including the writing of descriptive text to explain and interpret data patterns and trends.

The participants analysed education data from their own work areas and produced a basic report on the analysis of the data, using EXCEL Pivot-tables and Charts.

The practical skills learned from the training will assist the PPRD to produce statistical indicators for inclusion in the annual Education Statistics Digest and to develop evidenced-based policy using statistical data for the Ministry.
