From Ratification to Implementation: Pacific Intangible Cultural Heritage Workshop held in Nadi

The capacity building workshop on the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) safeguarding plan and International Assistance Requests (IAR) development in the Pacific island states took place in Nadi, Fiji, from 13 to 17 May 2019.

The workshop was organized by the International Training Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) in the Asia-Pacific Region under the auspices of UNESCO (CRIHAP), UNESCO's Category II Center in China and hosted by the Fijian Ministry of Education (Department of Heritage, Arts and Culture). The international team of UNESCO facilitators from Australia, Fiji and Palau facilitated the workshop sessions.

The officials in charge of culture from 12 Pacific island states attended the workshop, obtaining the critical knowledge and skills needed for the Pacific which is now moving forward from "Ratification" to "Implementation" phase of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The country reports presented at the workshop and the summary of the final discussion on Way Forward will be compiled into the Pacific ICH Action Plan 2020-2024. This first Pacific ICH Action Plan that identifies priority actions both at national and regional levels will provide a mid-term strategy and guidance.
