On the morning of the 11 May 2012, the National Museum of Samoa celebrated the launch of its new website: www.museumofsamoa.ws.

The keynote address was delivered by Prime Minister Tuilaepa Lupesoliai Neioti Aiono Sailele Malielegaoi who spoke in his capacity as the Acting Minister of Education, Sports and Culture. His speech highlighted the website’s role as a bridge—between the museum and the people who did not have access to the museum physically, such as those in rural communities in Samoa or foreign tourists; between the museum as a treasure house of Samoa’s past and its role as the cultural force towards shaping the future; and between the museum and artisans, students, art centers and advocates of culture that comprise the complex web of interaction that sustains Samoan culture.

He also extended his thanks to the efforts of the Museum staff and UNESCO for its continuous support, financially and otherwise, towards ensuring the successful launch of the Museum’s first steps in establishing a virtual presence on the world stage.

The Museum has, however, many more challenges it must face to ensure the long term success of the website. It must find a way to develop content for its website, train its staff to be capable of updating the website independently, and form partnerships, private and public, within the community to sustain this initiative.

Overall, the launch of the Museum of Samoa’s website is an important step towards bolstering the Museum of Samoa’s role as the guardian of Fa’aSamoa, and as guiding light in innovation and cultural development in the Pacific region.
