Oceans and Coasts

Through its International Oceanographic Commission (IOC), UNESCO seeks to improve society’s relationship with the ocean through the development and dissemination of scientific and traditional knowledge about the oceans and coasts and responses to some of the main challenges facing them, including climate change and other human activities. 

Particular areas of focus for UNESCO’s Office in the Pacific States are the UNESCO IOC Tsunami Programme and traditional knowledge of the oceans and coasts.
