The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development sets a transformational and universal vision for development requiring its 17 goals to be implemented in an integrated manner towards horizontal and vertical policy coherence. At the regional level, the Pacific Roadmap for Sustainable Development, inspired by S.A.M.O.A Pathway and the Pacific Framework for Regionalism, provides the regional vision for a region of peace, harmony, security, social inclusion, and prosperity in alignment with the 2030 Agenda.

The Social and Human Sciences programme contributes to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda and the Pacific Roadmap for Sustainable Development through targeted support in addressing the complex contemporary challenges of social transformation, in particular fostering social inclusion, building peace and reducing inequality. The Programme accompanies Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs) and all their partners to better address the challenges of increasingly diversified societies such as inequality and exclusion through an evidence-based and human-rights based approach.

The work of the SHS programme focuses on policy advice, capacity building for State and Non-state actors, and mobilising knowledge and dialogues towards evidence-informed public policy. The programme is delivered in collaboration with governments and civil society to

  • Build capacities for inclusive and evidence-based policymaking that responds to pressing socio-economic and environmental challenges and reflects universal ethical and human right frameworks;
  • Fostering innovative production of knowledge and strengthening the links between research practice and policy-making based on social science and humanities knowledge;
  • Mobilising multi-stakeholder dialogue and cooperation to valorize human rights, promote gender equality, and build peace.
