German-Lebanese Literature Workshops for Children
One year after the Lebanon war in July 2006, five German-speaking children's book authors, five of their Lebanese counterparts and a theatre artist, are conducting literature workshops for children and young people in libraries and schools in five different Lebanese cities, from November 12th until 16th 2007. The workshops will be organized in Beirut, Baaklin, Bint-Jbeil, Halba and Zahle.
The literature workshops are being held under the High Patronage of H.E. Dr Tarek Mitri, Minister of Culture, and organized by the Goethe-Institut Lebanon, UNESCO Regional Office – Beirut, ASSABIL association-Friends of public libraries, and the Lebanese Ministry of Culture, with the kind support of the German Federal Foreign Office.
Pairs of German and Lebanese authors will develop creative interpretations with children and young people on the basis of group reading of German and Lebanese children’s storybooks. Picture books, stories, comic illustrations and a theatre play will be performed. A closing event is planned for November 17th at 3 p.m, where participants will show the result of their work, at Monnot Theatre in Achrafieh, Beirut. Later on, the works will be on display in several libraries and schools across Lebanon, in addition to their online documentation.
The workshops will be divided into multiple sessions, mainly evolving around culture and literature dedicated for young children. It will include themes such as ‘creating a picture book, puppet theatre, stories and pictures, and comic illusions’, with each of these sessions taking place at a different school.
