Regional Expert Meeting on Education for Sustainable Development in the Arab States
UNESCO Regional Bureau for Education in the Arab States - Beirut and the Education for Sustainable Development Section (ED/PSD/ESD) at UNESCO HQ, in cooperation with the Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO organized the Regional Expert Meeting on Education for Sustainable Development in the Arab States: DESD Final Assessment and Post-2014 ESD Framework (Beirut, 15-16 April 2013.
The Regional Consultation Meeting is part of UNESCO joint effort with Member States on three processes of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD, 2005-2014):
1.Production of the Final Report on the UN-DESD, which will be one key input into the World Conference on ESD in Japan (November 2014);
2.Preparation of a Framework for post-2014 ESD work in the Arab region;
3.Review of regional and national contributions for the World Conference on ESD Programme and Sessions.
Over 25 officials and experts from Ministries of Education in the Arab countries and programme specialists/advisors from UN, International and Regional Organizations took part in the Expert Meeting.
UNESCO disseminated an ESD/DESD Questionnaire (Part I & II) for Member States (February 2013) to collect data and information on progress on ESD/DESD implementation, with focus on educational policies towards ESD; promotion of quality teaching and learning; capacity building; and development of curricula and resources. The data and information from 19 Arab countries will be reviewed to prepare regional contributions for post-2014 ESD Framework and DESD Final Report Assessment.
