Training Workshop on Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage

UNESCO Regional Office in Beirut and the Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture organized a workshop on the methodology and procedures of nominating intangible cultural heritage element to the Representative and Urgent Safeguarding Lists. This workshop took place in Byblos between 12 and 14 October 2012.

The main aims of this workshop were: 

  • Reinforcing the capacities of participants in Lebanon to contribute to a specific aspect of the implementation of UNESCO’s Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH)
  • Building the necessary knowledge and skills for the participants in order of preparation of nomination files for inscription on the Lists of the Convention, the requirements of the nominations process, evaluating sample nominations, discussing descriptions of the element from the Lebanon Inventory 
  •  Participating of communities in the process of identifying and documenting as well as the safeguarding measures identified.

The targeted group in the workshop were representatives of the UNESCO Regional Office, the Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO, the Ministry of Culture, in addition to the members of  the Lebanese MEDLIHER Team and an expert of Zajal, which is Lebanese folklore singing.
