Director-General condemns killing of Brazilian radio manager Renato Machado Gonçalves
Paris, 25 January—The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova voiced concern over the killing of Renato Machado Gonçalves, manager and co-owner of Radio Barra FM in Brazil’s state of Rio de Janeiro on 08 January.
“I condemn the killing of Renato Machado Gonçalves,” the Director-General said. “I invite the authorities to investigate this crime and bring the culprits to justice. Providing media workers with a reasonably safe working environment, in which crimes against journalists do not go unpunished is indispensable for sustaining independent and pluralistic media.
