Director-General condemns murder of Brazilian radio journalist Mafaldo Bezerra Goes
07.03.2013 - UNESCOPRESS
The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, today denounced the murder of radio journalist Mafaldo Bezerra Goes in the Brazilian town of Jaguaribe and called for an investigation into the case.
“I condemn the assassination of Mafaldo Bezerra Goes,” the Director-General said. “It is important that this case be investigated thoroughly and its culprits be brought to justice. Impunity must not be tolerated as it reinforces the vulnerability of media workers and seriously undermines press freedom.”
Bezerra Goes, 61, was shot dead on 22 February as he was walking to work at radio FM Rio Jaguaribe. He was the host of a programme which often denounced drug traffickers and criminal groups. Bezerra Goes is reported to have been the object of death threats.
He is remembered in the dedicated webpage, UNESCO Condemns the Killing of Journalists.
