Message by Lucien Muñoz highlights Oscar Niemeyer's universal importance

The UNESCO Brasilia Office Director Lucien Muñoz released an official statement about the passing of architect Oscar Niemeyer:

"UNESCO Brasil pays homage to the great artist and architect Oscar Niemeyer, who passed away yesterday at 104.  His work was celebrated in Brazil and all over the world and his relationship with Brasilia will be once again confirmed during the week of his passing: tomorrow, 7 December, is the 25th year anniversary of Brasilia's inscription as Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

As mentioned in a message issued by UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova, Oscar Niemeyer deserves the title of universal artist as well as eternal admiration from all of us. An admiration that goes beyond the successful work he has done until the end, with the unique personality he cast upon the principles of modernist architecture, which included the profound respect he nurtured for the human being, expressed in his constant disquiet with problems regarding social inequality.

Thank you, Niemeyer, for your life example."
