Salvador hosts 4th Preparatory Meeting for the World Science Forum 2013
The opening ceremony of the 4th Preparatory Meeting for the World Science Forum 2013 happened in the evening of 5 December, in the auditorium of the Federation of Industries of the State of Bahia (FIEB), in the city of Salvador.
The board was comprised of academic Jailson Bittencourt, coordinator of the Meeting in Salvador; secretary-executive of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), Luiz Antonio Elias; president of the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), Dora Leal; professor Helena Nader, president of the Brazilian Society for the Progress of Science (SBPC); Roberto Santos, president of the Academy of Sciences of Bahia; and Roberto Paulo Lopes, president of the Bahia Research Foundation (Fapesb).
Bittencourt explained the process of appointing Rio de Janeiro as host for the next World Science Forum. Created in 2000 by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Forum has been held every two years in that country since then. In 2010, the Brazilian Academy of Science and the Brazilian government proposed the alternation of Hungary and other countries in hosting the Forum, and offered the city of Rio de Janeiro as the host of the first edition outside Hungary. The proposal was accepted and the event will take place in 2013. The academic also mentioned the different themes of the previous Preparatory Meetings – that took place in São Paulo, Belo Horizonte and Manaus – , highlighting the core theme chosen for the Salvador meeting: sustainable energy.
