Seminar discusses South-South Cooperation this Friday (28), in Brasília

South-South Cooperation in Human Rights will be one of the themes of the seminar Reflections and Proposals about International Technical Cooperation in Human Rights, hosted by the Secretariat of Human Rights of the Presidency of the Republic Office (SDH/PR) this Friday (28) in Brasília. South-South Cooperation involves organized countries in the South of the globe aimed at putting forth initiatives of mutual cooperation.

There are several ongoing or under negotiation South-South cooperation projects at SDH/PR. The Guinea Bissau project for Civil Birth Record stands out among them. The internationally recognized initiative consists on the development of a policy for the universalization of Civil Birth Records in that country similar to the one carried out in Brazil. That cooperation began in 2008.

In Haiti, the standout project brings Public Policy Training for people with disabilities. The dynamics of its activities were inspired by the Rights of the Disabled Plan – Living Without Limits, launched by President Dilma Rousseff in November 2011.

According to General Coordinator of SDH Michelle Morais de Sá e Silva, the training classes were elaborated based on a study about Haitian reality and their existing policies. “The SDH is studying the development of innovative cooperation modalities that enable the involvement of other actors, including civil society, as well as greater effectiveness in the activities”, Michelle explains.

The SDH also has ongoing or under negotiation South-South Cooperation projects in Cape Verde in the area of Human Rights Education; in Colombia, towards the promotion and protection of LGBT rights as well as tackling sexual exploration of children and adolescents; the latter also being a subject of cooperation in El Salvador and Togo.

Attending the seminar, held in the Secretariat headquarters in Brasília, will be representatives of the Special Advisory Board for International Themes for the Presidency of the Republic, of the Brazilian Cooperation Agency, the International Director Office of the Institute of Applied Economic Research (IPEA) and the Institute of International Relations of the University of Brasília.
