16.10.11 Musicians from projects benefitted by Criança Esperança perform at UNESCO, in Paris
Why is it that young musicians greet each other with “bonjour” in the middle of the AfroReggae headquarters in Vigário Geral, Rio de Janeiro? This game can be easily explained – from 23 to 27 of October, the students in the AfroReggae String Orchestra and in the Baixada Fluminense’s Composers Association Movement (CAM) will be in Paris to inaugurate the “Open UNESCO” exhibition – a sample of activities in member States throughout the world -, and to play at the Criança Esperança “island”.
15.10.11 UNESCO announces winners of the Teacher’s Day Contest
In celebration of Teacher’s Day (15 October), UNESCO reveals the results of the contest that will award the top two answers to the question: How to value and respect our teachers and make schools a place of peace?” The winning sentences are: “Transforming schools and teachers into mediators – between people, contexts, cultures and knowledge – that are able to accept differences and overcome inequality,” by João Colares da Mota Neto and “First of all, value the school as an institution, the teacher as a professional and the student as a citizen; respect and peace will be the results,” Elizabeth Marquete.

UNESCO opened the application process for the International Memory of the World Register, a list of bibliographic and archival collections of world significance, which was established in 1997 in order to promote documentary heritage of universal status.

UNESCO Director - General Irina Bokova today paid tribute to the co-founder and past Chairman and CEO of Apple Inc, Steve Jobs, who passed away on 5 October.

Registrations are now open for the first edition of the new online course "Transparency and research: journalism with public information." The training is free and was funded by the International Programme for the Development of Communication IPDC-UNESCO.
05.10.11 Seeking at least two million teachers
Ahead of World Teachers’ Day, 5 October - dedicated this year to the theme of “teachers for gender equality” - UNESCO’s Institute for Statistics has published data demonstrating that at least two additional million teachers will be needed to meet the internationally agreed goal of universal primary education by 2015.
