01.10.11 UNESCO launches a new study regarding teaching policies in Brazil

On 03 September, in Natal (RN), UNESCO will launch the publication “Teaching policies in Brazil: state of the art”, developed in partnership with the Ministry of Education (MEC) and with the support of the National Council of Secretaries of Education (CONSED) and the National Union of the Municipal Directors of Education (UNDIME).

29.09.11 Registration for the 5th Teachers of Brazil Award are extended

The registration period for the fifth edition of Teachers of Brazil have been extended until October 15th. The competition will reward the best learning experiences, those that are proven successful in facing learning difficulties at the school and were developed by public school teachers throughout the country, at all levels of basic education.

26.09.11 Public hearing on the national guidelines for human rights education

 

In a public hearing organized by the Brazilian National Council of Education (CNE), on 22 September, the preliminary version of the curriculum guidelines on human rights education was presented and discussed with the Brazilian Ministry of Human Rights, education practitioners, NGOs and several human rights militants.

20.09.11 Seven young scientists win the Women in Science Prize 2011

Seven Brazilian researchers won the L’Oreal/UNESCO/ABC award for Women in Science and will receive a US$ 20.000,00 scholarship, in Reais, to help develop their research projects. The announcement was made by the Prize’s jury, presided over by Professor Jacob Palis, president of the Brazilian Academy of the Sciences (ABC). The award ceremony will be held on 28 September, in the Golden Room of Copacabana Palace Hotel, in Rio de Janeiro.

13.09.11 Sexual education on the agenda in Guinea-Bissau

 

Only some 13 per cent of young people in Guinea-Bissau could correctly identify how HIV was transmitted, according to a 2010 survey. And 21 per cent have already engaged in sexual relations by the age of 15.

The Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo (Argentina) will receive the 2010 Félix Houphouët-Boigny Peace Prize at UNESCO Headquarters on 14 September (3 p.m., Room I), in the presence of the President of Argentina, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, President of Côte d’Ivoire Alassane Dramane Ouattara and several other Heads of State or Government.
