Literate Brazil Programme
The Literate Brazil Programme [Programa Brasil Alfabetizado] was launched in 2003 in the whole country. Its main goal is to universalize literacy for adults and young people over 15 years of age.
It aims to triggering the interest of young people and adults in continuing their primary and secondary education, offering them a chance to raise their level of schooling.
The Programme represents an entrance gate to citizenship. It is directly linked to the growth of educational level of youth and adult. It promotes access to education as a right to all in every moment of life.
Besides, it emphasizes the better use of public resources invested in youth and adult education. The states and municipalities are partners of the federal government and receive financial resources for covering such costs of literacy activities as teacher training, purchase of school material, food and transport.
This initiative is conducted by a partnership between the Ministry of Education/Youth and Adult Education Department and UNESCO.
