Production of Pedagogical Materials based on the African History and Culture
Meeting the African countries’ expectations of adapting the contents of the General History of Africa Collection to school activities, UNESCO is preparing a series of pedagogical materials, aiming at improving the African students’ knowledge about their own history.
The goal is to contribute to the overhaul of the teaching of the African countries’ history and promote the regional integration process launched by the African Union. The idea is to develop subjects to be applied in basic education throughout the continent, as well as produce a teachers’ guide. A new scientific committee composed of ten members from the five African regions was created to oversee the production of the material.
In Brazil, the UNESCO office, in partnership with the Department of Continuing Education, Literacy, Diversity and Integration of the Ministry of Education and the Federal University of São Carlos, is preparing the production of instructional materials in Portuguese for teachers and students.
A Summary Book of the General History of Africa Collection, books on the African and African-Brazilian history and culture for basic education teachers, a gateway with interactive tools for basic education teachers and students and a geographical atlas, containing maps of the African continent and its diaspora, will be available.
