Water has become a top priority for UNESCO. Thanks to its numerous programmes, chairs, centers and institutes dealing with water, UNESCO is now recognized as the leading UN agency in this field. Its activities encompass both saltwater and freshwater issues, and deal with questions such as free access to water, coastal zones protection, or tsunami-preparedness.
2013 was declared International Year of Water Cooperation by the UN General Assembly, and the UN-Water partnership has designated UNESCO to take the lead of this international year.
