On the occasion of International Literacy Day 2012, on the 8th of September, the UNESCO Liaison Office in Brussels had the pleasure to receive H.R.H Princess Laurentien of the Netherlands, UNESCO Special Envoy on Literacy for Development.

Princess Laurentien of the Netherlands has been committed to literacy for years. She shared in particular with the UNESCO Liaison Office in Brussels her activities and projects as Chair of the Reading & Writing Foundation in the Netherlands. The aim of this foundation is to raise awareness, to bring together traditional and new stakeholders and to develop pilot projects, with a view to rolling out these practical solutions more broadly.

She also highlighted her role as chair of the EU High Level Group of experts on literacy, which presents recommendations on how to tackle low literacy levels in Europe. Its final report was launched on 6th September at a Presidency conference on literacy in Cyprus in the presence of Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou. The report can be found at: http://ec.europa.eu/education/literacy/what-eu/high-level-group/index_en.htm

Princess Laurentien expressed her wish and great interest to continue her cooperation with UNESCO, and more particularly with the Liaison Office in Brussels.

Finally, on the occasion of International Literacy Day 2012, the UNESCO Liaison Office invites you to watch the video message by Princess Laurentien recorded by UNRIC in our Office.
