World Press Freedom Day 2013

Every year, May 3rd is a date which celebrates the fundamental principles of press freedom; to evaluate press freedom around the world, to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the World Press Freedom Day. The official event will take place in Costa Rica and concentrate on the theme: “Safe to Speak: Securing Freedom of Expression in All Media”. The conference will focus on the safety of journalists, combating impunity for crimes against freedom of expression, and securing a free and open Internet as precondition for safety online.

On the occasion of the celebration of 2013 World Press Freedom Day in Brussels, 6 Members of the European Parliament kindly accept to be interviewed by the UNESCO Liaison Office in Brussels on the issue of safety of journalists and media workers. Let’s discover their messages.
