Education for Holocaust remembrance
UNESCO’s mandate is to build peace in the minds of men and women through education, culture, science and communication. Building peace requires understanding and remembering dark times in History in order to avert repetition of mistakes of the past.
UNESCO works thus to promote Holocaust awareness and to combat all forms of Holocaust denial through education. Teaching the lessons of Holocaust contributes to promote and transmit values of tolerance, peace and mutual understanding, and thus to combat all others contemporary forms of racism and discrimination.
UN Member States are encouraged to develop educational programmes to transmit the memory of the Holocaust to future generations, so as to prevent genocide from occurring again.
