Reducing the gender gap in science
Reducing the gender gap in science and encouraging the participation of women in scientific fields of study are also high priorities for the Organisation.
The L’Oréal/UNESCO Programme For women in Science awards each year five outstanding women scientists, one from each continent, for the contributions of their research, the strength of their commitments and their impact on society.
The programme allocates also each year 15 fellowships to young women scientist doctorate or post-doctorate, to help them to pursue research outside their countries of origin.
Since 1998, the L’Oréal-UNESCO Awards have recognised 72 Laureates, two of whom received the Nobel Prize in 2009, and 1200 Fellowships have been granted to young women scientists from 103 countries permitting them to pursue their research in institutions at home or abroad. As a result, the programme has become a benchmark of scientific excellence on an international scale, revealing the contributions of these scientific women each year.
