Hand-written letter from Lord Minto, the General Governor of India to Seri Sultan Mataram. The manuscript is a directive from the former telling the latter to pledge allegiance to the British after the fall of Java to the British in 1811. The language used in the manuscript is the Malay language but written in the Jawi script. The content of the manuscript reflects a long period of cultural and social relationships between people located as far apart as India and Southeast Asia. This manuscript provides an insight into the relationship between the governing powers in India and the local rulers in Mataram. It also relates to the eventual defeat of the Dutch in Java and the fall of Java to the British. The annexation of Java is seen as part of the Napoleonic War agenda involving the French, Dutch and the English.
