Takrut Reamker, An Epic of the World
Documentary heritage submitted for inclusion in the Memory of the World Register in 2012.
Takrut's recordings of the Reamker epic are the only known audio materials of an oral Khmer tradition. The Reamker, resulting from the Indian Ramayana, arrived in Cambodia together with Hinduism by the 2nd century at the latest and is a foundational epic of the Khmer people. It is closely intertwined with Cambodian memory, perceptions of the world, history, and culture, and is found in almost all Khmer art forms. Takrut was a renowned storyteller specializing in Reamker and is important as the art of storytelling nearly died out during the social upheavals of the 1970s.
