Date: a fairly significant majority of the documents pertain to the fifteenth century and the first half of the sixteenth century.

Truly unique set of public manuscript documents, the significance of which is that they offer information about and throw light on European, and more particularly Portuguese, relations with the peoples of Africa, Asia and Latin America, during the period mentioned above.

These documents represent a heritage of archives of considerable importance for acquiring knowledge of the political, diplomatic, military, economic and religious history of numerous countries at the time of the Portuguese Discoveries.
