Media Development in Knowledge Societies

12 December 2003, 10 a.m.-1 p.m - Palexpo, Room C

New opportunities for freedom of expression arise as traditional methods of communication are complemented by new information technologies.

But how can Cyberspace contribute to the building of knowledge societies without universal access to education and information? How can people benefit from the Internet if they lack access or if they are in constant fear of persecution?

These are key questions that must be answered if freedom of expression is to be the pillar of information and communication in Cyberspace and if Community Multimedia Centres (CMC) are to provide digital opportunities for all. Champions of press freedom examine these issues and CMC managers from Africa, Asia and the Caribbean explain how the CMC model can contribute to community development and freedom of expression.
