Associations and Unions
The General Association of the Professional Journalists of Belgium, L'Association Générale des Journalistes Professionnels de Belgique (AGJPB or AVBB) , is the umbrella organization for journalists in Belgium, bringing together the Francophone and Flemish speaking associations: L'Association des journalistes professionnels (AJP) and Vlaamse Vereniging van Journalisten (VVJ). The Francophone association also groups together German speaking journalists and most of the foreign correspondents working in Belgium. Both associations work for: defending journalists interests, the status of ‘professional journalist’ and all questions in relation to the profession and freedom of the press; safeguarding access to information; and overall, working as a mechanism of self-regulation for journalism.
The AGJB/AVBB also publishes a monthly magazine, DeJournalist / Journalistes, in French and Dutch.
Belgian Association of Editors (the Association des Editeurs Belges ) aims to defend, represent and provide information for all editors, media professionals, publishers and distributors of francophone material. While the the Belgian Newspaper Publishers Association (BVDU) defends the interest of publishers. The Belgian Association of French Language Newspapers (the Association des Journaux Francophone Belges- JFB) brings together all publishers of French and German language newspapers and works to represent the sector and defend the publishers’ common interests.
The Union des Editeurs de la Presse Periodique comprises of 300 magazine and other periodical editors from both language communities working towards defending and promoting the professional interests of its members.
The Flemish Newsmedia (Vlaamsenieuwsmedia) is an overarching organization for the Flemish newspaper publishing industry and their online publications; it represents editorial and business interests of news publishers at all levels.
The Ppress 20 is an umbrella organisation that brings together magazine publishers, professional publishers, online publishers, customer media and free publications. It works to encourage cooperation between its members and to promote their interests.
