Associations and Unions
There are several journalist associations in Israel mainly based geographically.
The Association of Israeli Journalists in Haifa and the North works to promote the professional and social interests of its members, provides training for new journalists and also monitors whether professional ethics are followed. The Journalist Association of Tel Aviv represents its members, makes sure their rights are respected and works to improve their working environments, collaborating with other players in the media field to assure this. There is also a journalists association in Jerusalem. Early in 2012 a new association –The Israeli Journalists' Organization– was formed under the Histadrut trade union federation. It already claimed 1,500 members, mostly disaffected members of the Tel Aviv Association.
Other associations include the Israel Association of Periodic Press which brings together journalists, writers and others who are working in professions in both the press and electronic media. Among its responsibilities, it works with the Knesset to reach understanding on issues related to the profession and the media field and also strengthening ties with other associations to further common goals such as the defence of the rights of media workers. Meanwhile, the Media and Press Association of Israel holds its goal as the improvement of the media quality in the country at all levels; it works with all associations and unions to further this goal whilst enhancing cooperation and communication among them. The Israeli Communication Association serves to provide teaching in media and research on the overall landscape.
