Lithuania

Having experienced long years of state controlled media and censorship under the Soviet Union, ensuring freedom of expression and a pluralistic and independent media is an important issue in Lithuania. Today, a legal framework is in place to guarantee these rights along with a self-regulatory framework for the media. To ensure a high professional standard for journalists, the Ethics Commission of Journalists and Publishers and the Inspector of Journalist ethics (the press council and ombudsman respectively) monitor that the relevant laws are adhered to and that the Code of Ethics of Journalists and Publishers is observed.
