The Netherlands has a strong tradition of a liberal media environment. The self-regulatory framework is strong, with a Press Council and various associations seeking to safeguard and promote high standards within the journalistic profession on all media platforms. The government’s role, on the other hand, is to ensure protection and support for the media, that it represents a variety of viewpoints, that it is accessible and affordable for all, operating within the provisions laid out in the constitution. The Netherlands was fourth on the Reporters Without Borders Press Freedom Index 2011-2012, showing that the defence of freedom of the press and expression continues.
