Switzerland
The media landscape of Switzerland has always reflected the countries’ specific multilingual and cultural nature and this remains unchanged. There is a diverse and pluralistic press, broadcasting and electronic media sector. The legislative framework guarantees freedom of expression, information and the media through the Swiss Federal Constitution while l federal and local laws concretize these principles. The Federal Government retains a role in the media through issuing licenses to the public broadcaster SRG SSR as well as to some private broadcasters. In media regulation, there exist both regulatory and self-regulatory mechanisms from the Independent Complaints Authority for Radio and Television, a federal authority, to the Swiss Press Council.
