Associations and Unions

There are three central organizations which represent journalists in Switzerland. The largest professional association for journalists is the Die Schweizer Journalistinnen Impressum; its membership draws from the written press, electronic media, photographers and other areas of the media landscape. It functions in line with its members interests and works to defend them; moreover it also works to defend the freedom of expression and right to information, offer judicial assistance to its members and works to support the journalistic professional and improve working conditions.

Then there is Syndicom, a trade union whose members comprise journalists, publishers, professionals from electronic media sector and others. It works to defend and promote the rights of workers in the communication and media sector via their employers. 
Lastly there is the Association of Swiss Specialist Journalists which represents editors and journalists of the specialized press; it works, overall, to defend the independence of specialized press and the interests of its members in the media sector and beyond such as to public institutions.

A central umbrella organization is Swiss Media (Schweizer Medien); it acts as a coordinating organization which works with regional organizations to represent the interests of media groups in the Swiss press sector. Its membership comprises over 150 groups which include newspaper and magazine publishers as well as professional journalists.
