Activities for 2012
Safya Saifi is a photographer with Pajhwok Afghan News, Afghanistan’s first independent news agency that was awarded the Committee to Protect Journalists’ prestigious International Press Freedom award in 2008.
WITHIN THE UN SYSTEM
The UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity is being implemented at global and country level and will be discussed during the 2nd UN Inter-Agency Meeting on The Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity on 22-23 November 2013 in Vienna, Austria.
Cooperation is being reinforced with the UN Special Rapporteurs on Freedom of Opinion and Expression and with the UN Special Rapporteur on Summary or Arbitrary Executions. Collaboration is also undertaken on the subsequent reports to the Human Right Council. A survey on women journalists and on violence against women, its causes and consequences is also carried out.
UNESCO is designing its Plan on Safety of Journalists and Combatting Impunity in consultation with Member States. This Plan will be presented to the Executive Board in Spring 2013.
