Czech Republic

The official national policy document in the field of science and research by The National Research, Development and Innovation  of the Czech Republic in 2009 – 2015 does not mention open access. But that does not mean that there is no development in this area in the Czech Republic. Czech Republic is in the initial phase of adopting OA. OA awareness is still mostly limited to library staff only, which explains why most OA initiatives in the country are seen to have been adapted only very recently. The essential organization for the advancement of science in the Czech Republic is the Research, Development and Innovation Council. Together with the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic and the Czech Science Foundation, they constitute the country's main science and research funders.

As of July 2015, 87 OA journals are indexed in DOAJ which are published in Czech Republic. There are 13 Czech open repositories registered in OpenDOAR.

03 institutional OA policies are currently registered in ROARMAP.

Enabling Environment:

OA initiatives have taken place. The Czech Science Foundation, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, and Masaryk University signed the Berlin Declaration.

The Association of Czech University Libraries (covering 23 universities) promotes OA issues by inviting recognized experts to introduce OA at its annual conferences Bibliotheca academica, by organizing seminars and supporting other events and activities conducted by university libraries, such as DSpace CZ or Open Access Week.
