FRIDA - Regional Fund for Digital Innovation in the Latin America and Caribbean is an initiative of LACNIC (Regional Registry for Internet Addresses for Latin America and the Caribbean) dedicated to contributing to the development of the Information Society in Latin America and the Caribbean by funding research projects and by recognizing and rewarding innovative approaches in the use of ICTs for development.

The FRIDA award recognized those digital innovation and research initiatives that contributed the most towards the development of the Information Society in Latin America and the Caribbean in the past years, aligned with the Ministerial Summit for the Information Society in Latin America and the Caribbean. Some of the awards go to projects related to Internet access which also enhables open access to education and research information. The 2011 FRIDA prizes.

The FRIDA meeting: “Researches on Information and Communication Technologies and public policies in Latin America and the Caribbean” took place in Montevideo, Uruguay, April 22 and 23, 2009

FRIDA also supported the research “Good practices and open access editorial policies for Latin American academic publications” in charge of the NGO from Chile Derechos Digitales with collaboration from Fundación Karisma of Colombia. This research has published a guide of good practices.
