Director-General condemns killing of journalist Ali Mahmud in Iraq

The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, has denounced the killing of television cameraman Ali Mahmud in Qayyarah, part of the Nineveh Governorate in the north of Iraq.

“I condemn the killing of Ali Mahmud,” said the Director-General. “Targeting journalists in conflict situations is contrary to the Geneva Conventions. Media workers must be protected in all circumstances.”

Mahmud, a cameraman for Al-Ghadeer Television, died on 13 July when the car he was traveling in was hit by both a roadside bomb and a heat-seeking device.

The Director-General of UNESCO issues statements on the killing of media workers in line with Resolution 29 adopted by UNESCO Member States at the Organization’s General Conference of 1997, entitled “Condemnation of Violence against Journalists.” These statements are posted on a dedicated webpage, UNESCO condemns the killing of journalists.
