Director-General deplores death of journalist Ibrahim Omar in Syria

The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, has denounced the killing of reporter Ibrahim Omar in the Syrian town of Tarmanin.

“I condemn the killing of Ibrahim Omar,” the Director-General said. “The civilian status of journalists in conflict situations must be respected and their lives protected, in keeping with the Geneva Conventions.”

Omar was killed on 11 July in the northern town of Tarmanin, where he worked for Al Jazeera Mubasher, the Arabic-language live feed news channel of the Al Jazeera Media Network.

The Director-General of UNESCO issues statements on the killing of media workers in line with Resolution 29 adopted by UNESCO Member States at the Organization’s General Conference of 1997, entitled “Condemnation of Violence against Journalists.” These statements are posted on a dedicated webpage, UNESCO condemns the killing of journalists.
