Strengthening community radio in Ethiopia
UNESCO, in cooperation with the Peace Family and Media Association (PFMA), organized a follow-up training workshop for Sude community radio broadcasters from 3 to 7 January 2012 in Adama, Ethiopia. The workshop was sponsored within the framework of UNESCO’s IPDC project “Bolstering the professionalism and programme production skills of community radio journalists in Ethiopia”.
The training, which was a follow-up to the first workshop held last October in Adama, brought together 10 broadcasters from the Sude community radio station in Oromia Region. The five-day session exposed participants to various important topics, including advanced writing skills and editing techniques, radio programme production, media ethics and laws. Trainees presented the radio programmes they had produced and broadcast after the first training session, which had involved public participation in the debates.
“We re committed to increase broadcasters’ capacities, to enhance the profession and to enable public bodies to create conditions for community radio to play its important role,” says Getachew Simie, Director of the Peace Family and Media Association.
Getachew Tesfaye, Sude community radio manager, believes that the UNESCO/PFMA training workshops are vital for his station: “They have changed our perspective and outlook, enabled us to implement new managerial skills and to apply a code of conduct. The workshops also allowed us to diversify our radio programming on a regular basis.”
According to a trainee Million Kifle, since the first workshop, the broadcasters and the management of the radio station engaged in launching new programmes focused on thematic issues affecting the community at large. “The trainings I attended helped me enhance my journalism skills and improve my understanding of the profession. We introduced daily news, radio shows and debates, which attracted more volunteer journalists to join us. These workshops definitely increased the radio station impact and sustainability,” he adds.
