The Director-General Opens Consultations on the next Medium-Term Strategy in Montevideo

On 14 September 2012, the Director-General opened the Consultation meeting with Member States and National Commissions of Latin America and the Caribbean on the preparation of the Organizations' Mid-Term Strategy 2014-2021 (37C/4) and on the Programme and Budget for 2014 - 2015 (37C/5). The meeting is being held in Montevideo, Uruguay.

In her opening message, the Director-General underlined UNESCO's message continues to be "to build peace in the minds of men and women".

Achieving this today depends on multiple factors -- social inclusion, access to water, the possibility for all children to have access to quality education which will open doors to employment opportunities, respect for all cultures and the acknowledgement of the identities of all people.

She underlined the need for all to work together to achieve these objectives through joint efforts. The Director-General stressed to all participants of the Regional Consultation that it is her wish for Member States to take ownership of the process and the final proposal of the Medium-Term Strategy.

Introductory remarks were made by the Minister of Education and Culture, Mr Ricardo Ehrlich and by Mr Oscar Gomez, Vice-Minister of Education and Culture and Secretary-General of the National Commission of Uruguay to UNESCO.
