UNESCO Director-General meets Tunisian President

During her official visit to Tunisia, on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova met with the President of the Republic of Tunisia, Dr Moncef Marzouki, on 3 May 2012 at the Presidential Palace in Carthage. The Minister of Education, Mr. Abid Abellatif and Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of Tunisia to UNESCO, Mr Khemmais Chemmari also attended the meeting.

The meeting focused on cooperation between Tunisia and UNESCO, in particular, on actions in the fields of education, culture and communication undertaken by the Organization in Tunisia after the Jasmine Revolution. The discussions also focused on the World Press Freedom Day celebrations.

The President and the Director-General joined the World Press Freedom Day celebrations to award the 2012 UNESCO Guillermo Cano Press Freedom Prize to the journalist Eynulla Fatullayev. The ceremony was attended by a number of high level officials, including US Deputy Secretary of State Esther Brimmer, representative of the host country of the 2011 event.
