UNESCO's Abdul Waheed Khan: Enhancing journalism is essential to development of a nation
Abdul Waheed Khan, UNESCO's Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information, participated in the 13th international journalism festival "All Russia" held in Dagomys, Russia, from 25 to 30 September 2008.
Mr Khan delivered his greeting speech at the opening of the Festival and a key note address at the round table on the importance of professional development of media practitioners, organized by UNESCO and the Russian Union of Journalists.
Abdul Waheed Khan noted that "promoting development of independent and pluralistic media, supporting quality and high-standard journalism and strengthening journalistic training institutions is essential to a development of a nation as a whole".
Within the framework of the Festival, Mr Khan met with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) communication and information specialists from the Commonwealth of Independent States to share UNESCO's vision on communication for development issues.
The Festival brought together over 3000 journalists and media professionals from Russia and other countries and hosted several conferences, meetings and round tables addressing the issue of professional development of mass media.
