Workshop in South Africa to assess media and information literacy in teacher education
UNESCO, in partnership with the University of Pretoria, will hold a Regional Training of Trainers Workshop on the Draft Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Curriculum for Teacher Education at the Groenkloof Campus of the University of Pretoria, South Africa, from 3 to 6 November 2009.
This workshop has a three-fold objective. Firstly, it aims to introduce at least 20 teacher trainers from Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa and Swaziland to media and information literacy in teacher education.
Another important output of this gathering will be receiving feedback on the relevance of the content, specific modules and the curriculum in its whole to teacher education - from the perspective of teacher trainers, curriculum developers and media representatives. This will contribute to the enhancement of the Draft Curriculum.
Finally, participants will be engaged in initial discussions on possible adaptation of the Draft Curriculum for Teacher Education.
The preparation of this Draft MIL Curriculum for Teacher Education is one key action of UNESCO's strategy to promote media and information literate societies, to foster the development of free, independent and pluralistic media, and to enhance civic participation in media.
Last September the Draft MIL Curriculum was the subject of an expert review meeting, which assessed and validated the draft modules and learning outcomes prepared by four working groups, and made recommendations for the improvement of the Curriculum.
The forthcoming Regional Training of Trainers Workshop is a continuation of the validation process for the Draft MIL Curriculum and is part of a series of such meetings. Two other regional workshops will take place in Montego Bay, Jamaica - for teacher training institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean; and in Colombo, Sri Lanka - for teacher training institutions in South Asia.
