Mission and Strategy

The objective of the UNESCO-Aschberg Bursaries for Artists Programme is to promote the mobility of young artists through residencies, both as an end in itself and in order to foster intercultural dialogue and cultural diversity. This residency programme will give priority to artists and institutions from developing countries in order to enhance North-South and South-South cooperation.

The Programme will focus on the disciplines of Creative Writing, Music and Visual Arts, all of which are essential to the development of sustainable cultural and creative industries

The aim is to promote artistic creation in all its forms, while respecting its independence and free expression.

Since the Programme’s inception, the Aschberg Fund has provided over $1.5 million to 650 laureates from 72 countries and to 149 institutions from over 30 countries.

While the core purpose of the Programme, set out when it was founded in 1994, remains unchanged, its new strategy clarifies the role and responsibilities of its key stakeholders, namely artists, artist residencies and the UNESCO Secretariat.

Henceforth, the Programme will grant approximately 40 bursaries per year in the fields of Creative Writing, Music and Visual Arts.
