Final presentation of results in Cambodia
The Final Presentation Workshop of the UNESCO Culture for Development Indicators (CDIS) took place on April 24, 2013 in Phnom Penh at the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts.
Coordinated and organized by the UNESCO Office in Phnom Penh and the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, the workshop was attended by 94 representatives from key public institutions and ministries, international development partners, UN agencies, research institutes, civil society and non-governmental organizations.
During the workshop, the final results of the CDIS were presented and participants were invited to contribute to their analysis and interpretation, as well as to discuss their statistical merit and the necessary improvements to national statistics systems. The presentation of these results generated a dynamic debate about culture and development and cultural statistics at the national level. Particular interest was given to economy dimension indicators that suggest a vibrant cultural sector with much room for growth.
As Cambodia is currently in the process of drafting a National Cultural Policy, the time is right for the wealth of knowledge and new data that has resulted from implementing the CDIS in the country. Such data will contribute to more informed cultural policies for development.
Discussions amongst participants also led to the suggestion of establishing key partnership at the national level such as a partnership between the National Institute of Statistics and the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, which would facilitate the collection of better cultural statistics and the ability to analyze culture and development in Cambodia.
